Figlia di Zeus e di Demetra, moglie di Ade, signora dell'Averno. Un giorno, mentre Persefone stava cogliendo fiori lontano dalla madre, fu rapita da Ade che la condusse nell'Averno. La madre andò a cercarla invano impedendo alla terra di produrre frutti. Zeus, per calmare il suo dolore, gliela fece restituire, col patto che per due terzi dell'anno restasse con la madre e per l'altro terzo con Ade.
Culto
Era anche chiamata Core, e Coreie erano le feste in suo onore.
